A little John Mclaughlin diminished riff...

Postby mikedodge on Sat Nov 29, 2008 10:09 am

Here's a diminished lick/riff that Mclaughlin's used a couple of times:

Code: Select all
E----------|----------|-----------|------------|--
B--2---2---|--5---5---|---8---8---|---11---11--|--
G--2---3---|--5---6---|---8---9---|---11---12--|--
D--2---4---|--5---7---|---8---10--|---11---13--|--
A----------|----------|-----------|------------|--
E----------|----------|-----------|------------|--

This is based off the Major triads found in the Diminished scale...F# A C Eb

The order they fall when played like this makes it sound even further out than just playing a Diminished scale.

You can hear this on Phenomenon: Compulsion on the Electric Guitarist album when he's doing those freakish chord jabs against Cobhams monstrous riffings. Its also found in Dear Dali Lama on Industrial Zen.
