Someone at another forum ask for some pointers on this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQSvPonV154

This is my response...

--------------------------------------------------------------

In a nutshell here's a few quick things I picked out for you...

Code: Select all
00:00 - 00:08

    Em                G              Em                 B7
E---------------------6/7--6/7-----|---------------------------------|
B---8--0--8--0--8--0--7/8--7/8--8--|--8--0--8--0--8--0---------------|
G---9--0--9--0--9--0------------9--|--9--0--9--0--9--0---------------|
D----------------------------------|--------------------10h13p10--7--|
A----------------------------------|---------------------------------|
E----------------------------------|---------------------------------|

   Em                 G               Em    B  B  C   B  Em

E---------------------6/7--6/7-----|---------------------------------|
B---8--0--8--0--8--0--7/8--7/8--8--|--8--0---------------8-----------|
G---9--0--9--0--9--0------------9--|--9--0--8--8--9---8--9-----------|
D----------------------------------|--------9--9--10--9--------------|
A----------------------------------|---------------------------------|
E----------------------------------|---------------------------------|

Code: Select all

|| Em | B/Eb | Em | B/Eb | D | C | Am6 | B7 | B7 ||

E-------------------------------------------------
B--8------7----8-----7-----7---5----5----4----4---
G--9------8----9-----8-----7---5----5----2----2---
D--9------9----9-----9-----7---5----4----4----4---
A--7------6----7-----6-----5---3----0----2----2---
E-------------------------------------------------

Code: Select all

Chord Progression that starts a 01:04

|| G | G Db | D Db D | Eb Em | D C |   A B  | A B ||

E--3------------------------------------------------
B--3----------7-----7------8------------------------
G--4----------7-----7------9------9----6--8---6--8--
D--5----------7--7--7------9------10---7--9---7--9--
A--5------4---5--4--5---6--7------10---7--9---7--9--
E--3---------------------------10-8----5--7---5--7--

Play in E Natural Minor for all the chords except any "B" chords: B/Eb, B, B7. For these chords use B Dominant Phrygian/E Harmonic Minor.

That's pretty much the whole flavor of the tune. This is very reminisent of the Mclaughlin, Di Meola, and De Lucia album Friday Night in San Francisco. It's right along the lines of Medditerainian Sundance and Guardian Angel. I'd highly recommend that album to you, plus the guitar playing of that album changed the world for a lot of people...including those three guitarist.

Hey, I hope it helps, and hope it makes sense. I'm still trying to figure out the count. I hear a REALLY fast/upbeat 7/8 count, but nothing pans out at a slower pace. I mean I can count out Mahavishnu Orchestra stuff, but for some reason I'm not putting this together. I think it's a there's two rhythms going at once, like a 3 for 4/4 or 5 over 4/4, or maybe one of those over 7/8. I thought Id give a rest last night and try it again later.

I can also help you with the some more detailed scale ideas. I copped a few of the riffs and understand how to solo through it (the FNISF album schooled me on this type of stuff) but notating it out would take a while, and tab alone would be difficult to understand. But, I'll put together a few lines in 1/8 notes to show you how they are playing Diatonically following chord tones, and then stomping in those B chords with the B Phrygian Dominant scale.

If you look through Part II of the Indian Slide lesson (covering E Phrygian Dominant) or the Phrygian Dominant Tutorial (covering D Phrygian Dominant), you would just need to move those licks to fit the B Phrygian Dominant position/scale and most all of them will fit.

I did check out more of their stuff. Great stuff!
