Major and Minor Triads and their Inversions

Postby mikedodge on Mon Nov 03, 2008 7:38 pm

When learning Triad forms across the fretboard one of the most simplest methods is to view them across three parallel strings.

While doing it this way you will also learn the Inversions of each of the chords on each set of 3 three strings.

If you are familiar with the idea that Major Triads consist of a R, M3, and 5 And that Minor Triads consist of a R, m3, and 5, you can create their "Inversions" by moving the first interval to the "back of" the triad, like so:

Now lets look at some ways you would play these Triads and their Inversions:
Code: Select all
Major Triads and their Inversions...

Root Inversion = R M3 5
1st Inversion  =   M3 5 R
2nd Inversion  =      5 R M3

Minor Triads and their Inversions...

Root Inversion = R m3 5
1st Inversion  =   m3 5 R
2nd Inversion  =      5 R m3

From the Root Inversion I moved the "front" R to the "back" to create the 1st Inversion.

From the 1st Inversion I moved the "front" 3rd to the "back" to create the 2nd Inversion.

Code: Select all

MAJOR TRIADS

A Major on EBG strings

E--0- = 5   --5--= R   --9---= M3
B--2- = M3  --5--= 5   --10--= R
G--2- = R   --6--= M3  --9---= 5
D----
A----
E----

A Major on BGD strings

E----
B--2--= M3  --5--= 5    --10--= R
G--2--= R   --6--= M3   --9---= 5
D--2--= 5   --7--= R    --11--= M3
A----
E----

A Major on GDA strings

E----
B----
G--2--= R   --6--= M3   --9--= 5
D--2--= 5   --7--= R    --11-= M3
A--4--= M3  --7--= 5    --12-= R

A Major on the DAE strings

E----
B----
G----
D--2-= 5    --7--= R    --11--= M3
A--4-= M3   --7--= 5    --12--= R
E--5-= R    --9--= M3   --12--= 5

Now understand that these are nothing more that the "Major Triad Snippets" from these large chord forms (ala CAGED)":

E--0-----5-----5-----9-----9---
B--2-----2-----5-----10----10--
G--2-----2-----6-----9-----9---
D--2-----2-----7-----7-----11--
A--0-----4-----7-----7-----12--
E--0-----5-----5-----9-----12--

Code: Select all

MINOR TRIADS

Am on EBG strings

E--0--= 5    --5--= R   --8--= m3
B--1--= m3   --5--= 5   --10-= R
G--2--= R    --5--= m3  --9--= 5
D----
A----
E----

Am on BGD strings

E----
B--1--= m3  --5--= 5    --10--= R
G--2--= R   --5--= m3   --9---= 5
D--2--= 5   --7--= R    --10--= m3
A----
E----

Am on the GDA strings

E----
B----
G--2--= R    --5--= m3   --9--=5
D--2--= 5    --7--= R    --10-= m3
A--3--= m3   --7--= 5    --12-= R
E----

Am on the DAE strings

E----
B----
G----
D--2-= 5    --7--= R    --10--= m3
A--3-= m3   --7--= 5    --12--= R
E--5-= R    --8--= m3   --12--= 5

Now understand that these are nothing more that the "Minor Triad Snippets" from these large chord forms (ala CAGED)"

E--0-----5-----5-----8-----8---
B--1-----1-----5-----10----10--
G--2-----2-----5-----9-----9---
D--2-----2-----7-----7-----10--
A--0-----3-----7-----7-----12--
E--0-----5-----5-----8-----12--

Now, next time you are stuck vamping on just a Major chord or a Minor chord (or any combinationof them), you can use these Inversions to create "harmony movement/shifting" over the one chord you're on.

To work on these, play a vamp consisting of nothing but an A Power chord. Then use all these A Major, or all these A Minor, Inversions shown above to play over that single chord.

Or take a progression like ||: C | C | F | F | Am | G | C | C :|| then...

Use the Inversions of each chord that are "close" or near each other to from nice, very concise, harmonic movements or voice leading, like these for example:

Code: Select all

      C       F     Am     G
E---8-----8-----8----7---
B---8-----10----10---8---
G---9-----10----9----7---
D-------------------------
A-------------------------
E-------------------------

Now go back to all those different triad inversions for Major and Minor chords and use them at will to cover these chords, or for any chord progression for that matter.

Try something that has a Minor Modal flavor to it like So What, and use the Dm and Ebm Inversions to solo with as single notes, or to comp with as chord voicings.

Try a simple Major Modal idea like:

||: D | D | Eb | Eb | D | C | D | D :||

Treat EACH ONE of those chords with it's OWN SET of Inversions.

Enjoy!!!
